A short story about how Makka wound up with the Shahiyah, and to describe Ineni's relationship with Anastice.

Anastice: An Inorii priestess. Makka's guardian, Ineni's master
Dog-Penis and Hippo-Ass-Face: The slavers who bought Ineni from his former master, and brought him to Inis-Nor to sell at an auction. Not their real names. 
Dragan: Makka's father*; the third son of the Inorii queen Yaro, who was killed during a failed coup against her along with his older brother Yarold. There are rumors that he managed to  escape is is still alive somewhere- but (spoiler) he's not. 
Faraka: A Shahiyah assassin, and (side note) Anastice's former lover
Ineni: An Ineferean slave and partial eunuch. Makka's tutor
Makka: An Inorii girl

Bakuraz: A desert kingdom far to the southeast
Dead Lands: The vast desert between Bakuraz and Inefer
Greater East: The Inorii word for all the realms which lie east of them, particularly in the southeast
Inefer: Ineni's homeland; southwest of Bakuraz
Inis-Nor: Makka and Anastice's homeland; an island realm, located far to the north
Tualach: Inis-Nor's second largest island, located in the realm's southwest

Alu-na: The monotheistic religion of the Bakurazi, based on the worship of the Erithosan god of fire
Shahiyah: A group of mercenaries and assassins who inhabit the Dead Lands

Some notes about Inis-Nor and their queen, Yaro: Inis-Nor has, for most of it's history, consisted of independent tribes and clans, who have seen themselves as bound by language and culture but not by blood. The south has been mostly populated with descendants of Inis-Nor's oldest tribes, known as the First People. The north is mostly inhabited by the descendants of later raiders and eventually conquerors who came from what is now Sakuvia, to the east. However, both of these groups- and others- have lived in the isles for some time, and most Inorii ancestry is mixed. Also, invading groups mostly adopted local customs and language, rather than imposing their own- though this is not to say they had no influence. 

Southern Inis-Nor was controlled for some time by the great western empire known as Adalland. Eventually, the empire got greedy and decided to invade the north- which caused the Inorii to unite for the second time in their recorded history. They drove out the empire, and elected to become a unified realm lead by Clan Faylan, a little less than 100 years ago. Still, many of the lords see themselves as independent kings, and their fellow Inorii as foreigners. Their unity is precarious, but it is absolutely essential to their survival. Although they officially have peace, Adalland still wants to conquer them- or to see them conquered by neighboring Aventia. 

Enforcing this unity is Queen Yaro- a Sakuvian, who married into the royal family and came to rule in her own right after her husband's death. Like all Sakuvians, Yaro is xenophobic in the extreme. The realm is her legacy, her chance for immortality, the thing for which she will sacrifice everything else. She wants to build it into a sort of utopia, and her utopia doesn't include the south or their traditions. She believes strongly in northern racial superiority- an idea which is relatively new to Inis-Nor, but which is nonetheless exacerbated by the fact that the south was controlled for so many years by Adalland, and ultimately bailed out by the north. Most of the actual resistance comes from the island of Tualach, which has historically been very independent and home to the largest number of First People, and which struggled from the beginning to accept the governance of he monarchy. This was true as well when they were controlled by the empire, and many in the region are bitter that they seemed to  have exchanged one despot for another. However, it is important to note that not everyone hates the Queen. Many people love her, in fact, and while some of this has to  do with fear and propaganda, their are also legitimate reasons for her popularity.
